This show is investigating the "Densha Otoko" effect. Densha Otaku, or trian man is a movie based on real life story where a socially incapble fanboy rescued a lady harrassed by a drunk on the subway. It lead to the train man's realization of himself and his fear of the reality. The train man eventually broke through the inner barrier. They ended up together.
The movie is said to shine hope and courage on the fanboys where the story took place, that they would stand up to evil and protect the meak. Out of 100 subjects, 69 of them attempted to rescue the girl from the drunk in one way or another. This is rather impressive in my opinion. I have always thought of Japan as an indifferent and selfish society.
Now the real question is, would those fanboys have done it if the girl was ugly?
