For some reason I am recollecting something my professor said to us during my 2nd year in UBC Physics. It was in thermodynamics class, we were having a discussion of entropy and the state of equilibrium. In complete equilibrium, all order ceases to exist. The universe favors entropy and all matter will go towards the state of maximum chaos. Is equilibrium really a good thing? In equilibrium, the orders of our body structure at the smallest level break down. We turn into a pile of liquid and organic matters. In equilibrium, our lives cease to exist. All matters in the universe will suspend in a thin mist of floating nothingness. This is the equilibrium from the thermodynamic point of view.
In life, we fight equilibrium. We build houses from the raw chaotic timber. We weave fur into clothing. We bring orders to the world as we see fit. Yet nature favors chaos. Houses rot away if you let it sit. Cloth decomposes. Delicate food spoils. Yet the cycle repeats as we continue to fight equilibrium over and over again in our lifetime. All life fights equilibrium. Whether it be trees, birds, or bacteria.
Some Physicists have quite a weird view of this world.
